Database Migration Services

Kloudone provides database migration for a variety of proprietary databases.

Oracle RAC to Postgres

Oracle to Postgres migration can be quite complex depending upon the requirements. Some clients like to enable two way replication of the same environment (test first in Dev, then staging and then in prod), before they migrate the app.

Depending upon the needs, we either use Oracle Golden Gate (License required), AWS DMS services or Debezium for Oracle based data migration. More often than not, for one time database migration, Oracle Golden gate works the best followed by Debezium. For things like DDL Replication, we have custom tools that we have built that enable this for the customer databases on to the target Postgres Database.

Oracle RAC to MySQL (PXC or MariaDB Standalone)

Oracle to MySQL (PXC or MariaDB Standalone) migration can be done with a variety of tools including - Golden Gate (License required) or Debezium for Oracle based data migration.

RDS to Percona XtraDB Cluster (PXC)

RDS is a hosted Amazon services that provides MySQL and Postgres databases in a managed manner.

  • Slow: RDS is not necessarily performant compared to stock MySQL

  • Limits on vertical scaling: Ultimately Aurora has limitations on being a 3 node cluster (max) with limits on vertical scalability based on the node sizes.

  • Vendor Lockin: Aurora like all great Amazon services is only available on AWS. AWS is a vendor and a lockin is not desirable for organizations looking to be agile.

Because of these reasons, many customers choose to move out of RDS and Kloudone can help you make your migrations really easy. We have done several migrations of large scale applications out of RDS, most typically to K8s managed databases.

  • Extremely expensive: Aurora costs can skyrocket based on the size of instances that you sue.

Aurora is a modern db by Amazon that offers MySQL and Postgres on Steroids. Unfortunately, Aurora has a bad reputation of being

Postgres to sharded Citus data powered deployment

Citus is a PostgreSQL extension that transforms Postgres into a distributed database—so you can achieve high performance at any scale.

With Citus, you extend your PostgreSQL database with new superpowers:

  • Distributed tables are sharded across a cluster of PostgreSQL nodes to combine their CPU, memory, storage and I/O capacity.

  • References tables are replicated to all nodes for joins and foreign keys from distributed tables and maximum read performance.

  • Distributed query engine routes and parallelizes SELECT, DML, and other operations on distributed tables across the cluster.

  • Columnar storage compresses data, speeds up scans, and supports fast projections, both on regular and distributed tables.

  • Query from any node enables you to utilize the full capacity of your cluster for distributed queries

Oracle to MongoDB

We deliver Oracle to MongoDB migrations where customers want to migrate to a document database instead of storing blog / json schema objects in MongoDB.

Migration process

Performance Baselining

In all scenarios we baseline the application performance and benchmark it against the Original with MySQL. We test HA, replication, Failover, node failures, and RPO and RTO is established and documented.

Application re-engineering

In most cases applications are re-engineered to connect, and deliver the requisite performance against the new databases

K8s hosted databases / VM Databases

In many cases where mission critical performance is required from databases - VM based databases are recommended. In most other cases, we recommend migrating to K8s hosted databases which can provided automated replication, HA, Fault tolerance and ability to scaleout.

K8s is typically configured as a stateful set with taints and tolerations to help ensure higher performance.

Slow query tuning

As a part of the process we tune all slow queries and continously identify new ones to deliver higher performance.
